Make it stand out
Brooklyn Public Library
Year: 2000
Partner
Brooklyn Public Library
Location
Brooklyn, NY (Canarsie)
Context / Challenge
I proposed that the BPL could reimagine its role in the community as a hub for young people beyond books—a critical, safe alternative to street life and negative influences—a place for culture, creativity (specifically media and arts), and civic engagement.
Role
Creative consultant and experience designer (or Social Imagineer) — leading the co-creation of youth-centric innovation and community-building programs.
What We Built
Afterschool programs that utilized a "Powerhouse Community Arts Center" model, bringing teens together for civic leadership (The L.E.A.D. Program), creative expression (e.g., "Hip Hopology" workshops and media/recording access), and cultural activations—all while leveraging existing library resources.
Approach / Methods
Creative placemaking, participatory design, and youth-led programming focused on cultivating "Role Models" and building a pipeline of social entrepreneurs through structured, real-world projects.
Impact / Outcomes
The BPL became more accessible and relevant to young audiences, serving as a powerful alternative space. It positioned the library as a cultural hub where teens felt seen, engaged, and empowered as community leaders.
Story
“We didn’t just bring kids into the library — we let them bring the library to life, proving that the best way to predict the future is to create it.”
